On June 20, 1871, the first federal trials against Ku Klux Klan members commenced in Oxford, Mississippi. These trials were part of President Ulysses S. Grant\’s efforts to suppress the Klan\’s violent activities during Reconstruction. Over 900 individuals were indicted, with 243 convictions. The trials marked a significant federal intervention to protect the civil rights of African Americans and enforce the 14th and 15th Amendments.
